It starts off as the story of Tessia, daughter of a village healer who aspires to be a healer herself, even though women may not have that role. When she is discovered to be a natural magician, her life changes course. She is taken as the apprentice of her father's lord, Lord Dakon where she is introduced to the study of magic.

When dissidents from the near by country of Sachaka invade, as an apprentice, Tessia is drawn away to the war to support her master.

There is also a really great series of four DVDs that covers the same material.
