This is an interesting book that traces English from it's humble beginnings as a marginal tribal language of a people who migrated to the British Isle's in search of land, through Alfred the Great, the Danes, William the Conqueror, 3 centuries of French rule, Chaucer, Shakespeare, the British Empire, Australian English, American English, Jamaican English and Indian English.
There is also a really great series of four DVDs that covers the same material.
